A small town with a rich past which knew how to keep its medieval charm

The rich history of the town of Rosheim…

Records show that Rosheim has been occupied since the Neolithic period. In 778 under Charlemagne, the first reference was made to "Rodashaim", then just a village.

Around 1220, the first stone fortifications were built. Fifty years later, Rosheim became a city and acquired its own seal. Confirmed as an Imperial City in 1303, the winemaking town rapidly gained stature. In 1354, it was one of ten Alsatian Cities comprising the Decapolis, an alliance of mutual aid and a counterweight against feudal power.

Thanks to winegrowing and an active bourgeoisie, the Renaissance brought prosperity to the town. The beautiful, vast half-timbered houses of the town centre and the Six-Bucket Well are proof of this affluence.

Like the rest of the Alsace, the city suffered the torments of the Thirty Years' War from 1618 to 1648. But in the 18th century Rosheim thrived once more. This was when the City Hall and Saint Etienne Church were built.
